The Advent 300 (Sound of the Wood™ series II) are vintage units with totally revamped power supplies, revisions and upgraded components to exceed the original specifications. The phono stage in the original Advent 300’s are very good, with the listed modifications these units are “jaw dropping”. If you are thinking of spending a thousand or more on a great pre-amp or phono-stage, do yourself a favor and try one of these units. You won’t be disappointed!

Note 75 ohm Antenna F-Connector.

Black Gate caps in critical phono and line pre-amp stage

brings stunning sound depth and transparency.

Phono stage:

  • Black Gate caps in select positions in the phono and line preamp sections.

  • Switchable capacitance loading for phono added - 2-position switch, pair of 100pf polystyrene caps.

  • Pot added for variable resistance loading for phono along with 2 metal resistors to fix minimum loading at 100 ohms.

  • Hardwired tone control bypass.

  • Phono RCA jacks replaced with gold plated, Teflon dielectric ones. Solid core silver wire used to connect jacks to PCB on signal path.

  • Pre-amp out and power amp in RCA jacks replaced with gold plated, Teflon dielectric ones. Solid core silver wire used to connect jacks to PCB on signal path.

A recent Advent 300 advertisement:

“The Advent 300 was one of Tomlinson Holman's greatest feats. He created the first truly "musical" phono stage (at least in the transistor era) and included this in a moderately priced "Black Box". Henry Kloss oversaw this project. In the Absolute Sound, Pearson described this (the phono stage) as nothing short of incredible, especially when compared to Pre-Amps costing under $1000.00. In the 70’s and on Pearson’s advice many "vinyl cultist" bypassed the tone controls to gain even more transparency. These units have the "tone defeat" modification, and is stunning in its depth and transparency.”
